About
Kids POP is the kid-focused segment of POP Montreal that happens every spring and fall, offering programming with the same quality and innovativeness as its big bro - but geared towards kids of all ages! Stay tuned for information on the awesome stuff we're planning for this spring!
The 2010 edition of Kids POP was our most successful yet! Continuing with our mandate to program children's workshops and concerts that both empower and educate youth, in a fun, creative environment, we put together a series of five workshops in partnership with our friends at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore, that made for an amazing two days. One of the weekend's highlights was definitely our Pirate Radio sessions that ran continuously throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday, in the front window of the Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore. On a drop-in basis, kidsstepped up to the mic to tell stories, jokes, sing songs, request music, give the weather report, as well as sports updates, producing ad-lib day-long radio show that could be heard outside the bookstore along Bernard Street. Several times throughout the weekend, impromptu dance parties started up outside the broadcast window, to the delight of the kids, their parents and passersby!
Kids POP's other amazing workshops last year included: Intro to Print Matter, wherekids created their own cards, stationary and other items using introductory printing techniques, such as the infamous "potato stamp;" Picturing Personas: A Band's Story, where participants explored musical personas through movement, discussion and drawing; and finally, Krista's Songwriting Machine, where kids learned how songs were made, and through writing, drawing and playing, created two original songs which were then recorded and broadcast live on the kids' radio station! To top it all off, Kids POPwas thrilled to present two back-to-back concerts by legendary children's entertainer and TV personality, Fred Penner, co-presented by The Rialto and Indie Montreal. Fred Penner: The Cat Came Back was an enthralling hour of old classics and new originals that had the young (and young at heart!) dancing in their seats. With the overwhelming success of this year's Kids POP, you can look forward to much more innovative children- and family-friendly programming in the future!
